Top 5 Map Apps for Firefox

1: Quick Maps

Quick Maps has 4 stars out of 5 from 38 user reviews in Firefox's add-ons library. The add-on has a total of 45,048 users.

This app from Mapify adds in-page Google Map frames to website street address listings. Just hover your mouse over or highlight and right-click on the physical street address listing on a Web page within Firefox and an elegant Google Maps frame will embed on the Web page with the map and location label.

It also provides a highlight and one right-click Google search based on the address highlighted. Pretty.
2: Google Shortcuts - All Google Services at a Glance

Google Shortcuts has 4 stars out of 5 from 311 user reviews in Firefox's add-ons library. The add-on has a total of 124,912 users.

Soeren Rinne's Google Shortcuts app simply adds Google services buttons, including one for Maps, next to the address bar on the Firefox browser.
The default setting is to create multiple buttons, including ones for Maps, Gmail, the now defunct Google Reader, Calendar and so on. However, from the app's settings icon, remove the ones you don't use. Retaining the Maps button only provides a speedy one-click Google Maps launch.
3: Bing Maps powered by Microsoft Silverlight

Bing Maps Powered by Silverlight has 5 stars out of 5 from one user review in Firefox's add-ons library. The add-on has 70 weekly downloads.

If you're a little bored with Google Maps, BillVo's Bing Maps for Silverlight may make a welcome change. This app simply adds a Bing Maps SL option in the Firefox Search dropdown next to the address bar. Choose it to generate fluid map results from an alternative provider.
Both Microsoft's Bing Maps and Google's Maps use their own, unique aerial shots, so you'll see subtle detail differences, including clarity related to lighting based on time of day and other variables.
4: Google Maps Terrain View
Google Maps Terrain View is not yet rated and has no user reviews in Firefox's add-ons library. The add-on has seven weekly downloads.

This app offers functionality similar to that delivered by our No. 3 spot, Bing Maps Powered by Silverlight, except that this is a Google Maps Terrain option for the Firefox Search dropdown.
Simply choose the option to have the search engine default to Terrain rather than Satellite or Map. It's a useful solution if you're performing multiple searches for locations for the purposes of outdoors activities in which hills are important.
5: Locator - Locate on Google Map
Locator has 4 stars out of 5 from 32 user review in Firefox's add-ons library. The add-on has 7,672 users.

Here's an alternative to our No. 1 position Quick Maps that uses a highlight-and-right-click selection method rather than hover-over. It also produces a pop-out map in a new window rather than a map in an embedded frame.
It's a slightly less elegant solution, which is why it's in a runner-up position. At the same time, however, the new-window functionality does allow for map re-positioning on the screen and is consequently good for the screen real-estate-challenged.

5 Best Weather Apps for Google Chrome

1: Full Screen Weather

Full Screen Weather has 4 stars out of a possible 5 from 2,533 reviewers in the Chrome Web Store. The app has 952,524 users.

Without a doubt, this app offers the best-looking weather maps out there for desktop, even if it is a little peculiar to navigate.
Full Screen Weather
This Wunderground crowdsourced app is simply a straight mash-up of Google Maps along with satellite or terrain detail -- and superimposed radar, satellite weather or reporting weather station data. Thousands of data sources are included, such as hobbyist stations and remote automated stations perched on mountaintops. Drill-down for super-local observations.

 2: Rain Alarm

Rain Alarm has 4 stars out of a possible 5 from 304 reviewers in the Chrome Web Store. The app has 81,331 users.

This app warns you of precipitation headed your way. Set your location and some parameters, like a search radius, and the app will alert you. You may have to adjust sensitivity and search interval, but it does usually work.
Alternatives include looking out of the window.
 3: WeatherBug

WeatherBug has 4 stars out of a possible 5 from 3,016 reviewers in the Chrome Web Store. The app has 608,449 users.

A good, solid, all-round weather extension with animated graphics. A close-by weather cam will display in the animated window if available. An additional add-on for Windows gives you severe weather alerts in your taskbar.
Detailed observations include must-haves like humidity, monthly rain and an interesting rain rate for the day. All useful stuff.
 4: Uber Weather
Uber Weather has 4 stars out of a possible 5 from six reviewers in the Chrome Web Store. The app has 3,490 users.

Here's a Google-driven weather map that includes layers like ski resorts, driving directions and traffic. It's not quite as elegant as the other apps we've included, hence its runner's-up position. Still, it is remarkably interesting to see traffic snarl-ups created by weather, and it's a tool you can use to pick alternate freeway commute routes based on rain-dumping weather cells.
 5: YoWindow Weather
YoWindow Weather has 5 stars out of a possible 5 from 4,467 reviewers in the Chrome Web Store. The app has 190,747 users.

"Quirky" would be a good one-word description for this very popular extension. Clicking on a button adjacent to the address bar creates an animated "living landscape" that reflects the weather.
Choose from weather layer-superimposed pastoral scenes, cityscapes and other scenes -- or make your own with any photo -- and the weather animates in real-time, a bit like looking out of a virtual window. A time scroll lets you project a forecast graphically. Fun, if you've got time on your hands.

Unexpected features in iOS 7

CHANGE THEME :

You cannot  actually change the theme of the new design, but   you can change the feel of your iOS 7 device to much extent that can be only through just by changing the background. Because of  changing the background the look of the lock screen, the dial pad when making a call, and the pass code screen are changed  by letting the background colors show through.  You can try different backgrounds.

CALENDER DAILY QUICK VIEW :
Now, to bring up the day's events at a glance, you need to hit the search magnifying glass at the top of the screen. It's not exactly intuitive, but I'm relieved it's still there.

Hiding Newsstand :
Newsstand is useful for finding magazines and other reading materials, and you can set up subscriptions so you get new issues of periodicals such as The Economist every week. But in previous versions of iOS, people who were not interested in reading magazines on their iPhone couldn't put Apple's Newsstand app in a folder to save home screen space. The concept behind it was that Newsstand already was a folder of items itself and you couldn't put a folder into another folder.

Fortunately, in iOS 7, you no longer need to deal with work-arounds. Newsstand finally can be placed in a folder. It's even useful for those who use Newsstand all the time because you can drop it into a more general news folder to have a central location for all your news sources.

Quitting multiple apps
Sometimes you have to quit apps and the old method of double-tapping the home button and long-pressing the app to go into jiggle mode was kind of a tedious process. In iOS 7, you now can double-tap the home screen and flick the app preview thumbnail upward to quit. It's a bit faster, but in playing with my iPhone during the review I made another discovery.
Not only can you flick to quit an app, you also can use three fingers to quit three apps at a time with the same swiping motion. This will let you make sure apps aren't running processes in the background when you want the full power of your iOS device and it's a much faster method.
Infinite folders
In ios 6 and earlier versions, you could only have up to 16 apps in a folder. This might be OK if you don't download a lot of apps, but if you're like me, you were forced to make folders like "Games 1" and "Games 2" if you wanted to organize your home screen.
Now, in iOS 7, you can put an infinite number of apps (or until you have no more storage space on your device) into a folder so you can truly organize your home screen. iOS 7 organizes your apps into groups of nine, and you can swipe to move on to each page. This should help limit the number of home screen pages you have to navigate and make for a more organized layout.

Make iOS 7 more readable
One thing I've been hearing since the update is that people with less-than-perfect eyesight have some trouble reading the thin fonts in the new design, especially when they're in front of bright backgrounds (Calendar app, I'm looking at you). Fortunately, there's a fix.
If you have trouble reading the fonts in iOS 7, go to Settings > General > Accessibility, then touch the switch for Bold Text and also the Increase Contrast switch right below it. It will require a restart of your iPhone, but now reading should be a lot easier -- even in the Calendar app.
Using the compass as a level
The compass app is a neat tool to have on your iOS device to help you get your bearings when you're outdoors, sailing, or doing any number of other activities. But a new feature of the compass app in iOS 7 will help those who work on things around the house with a feature that acts as a level.
To keep your household handywork from coming out crooked, you can now swipe to the left on the compass, and you get a digital level tool. With this page open, you can set your iPhone on a table you might be making or even on its edge when hanging a picture, and you'll be able to tell if it's truly level.

Many essential features like flight check-in (although present in the app) are not working right now, which we expect will be added in the coming weeks/ months.

“We are excited to launch our Android app which is a result of a multi-level collaboration between Jet Airways and Google. This is another step in leveraging the potential of mobile technology to offer substantial convenience and ease while adding great value to our guests’ overall experience while they interact with the airline,” said Sudheer Raghavan, Chief Commercial Officer, Jet Airways.

MapmyIndia adds real-time traffic updates in Android app

MapmyIndia has announced that its Android app now shows real-time traffic updates for select cities.  The feature seems to have been made live in the last update, which was pushed on September 6 to the app; the company was probably removing any last minute kinks before officially revealing about the feature.

Learn Java
The cities for which you can now check real-time traffic data using MapmyIndia app are Delhi-NCR, Mumbai and Bengaluru. It is a surprisingly small number of cities and the company should have at least included traffic data for all tier-1 cities.
We checked out the feature on our phone just now and it seems to be working fine but overall the whole MapmyIndia app is too slow and seriously needs a revamp. Given the fact that Google Maps already offer traffic data for a lot more cities and along with free voice-guided navigation support, there is hardly any reason why anyone would want to use MapmyIndia app.

Micromax to pre-load BBM for Android on Canvas smartphones

Micromax has announced that it will pre-load BlackBerry Messenger for Android on its Canvas-series of smartphones beginning first week of October. The existing users can download the app from Google Play once it goes live on September 21.

“We have built a strong mobile ecosystem for our users, which not only drives them to buy our products, but also builds a connection with the brand by massifying and democratizing technology in India. Bringing one of the most popular mobile messaging services with BBM on our smartphones is yet another effort to expand our bouquet of messaging services for our consumers to connect and communicate seamlessly with their loved ones,” said Deepak Mehrotra, CEO, Micromax.
While, this news is good for BlackBerry and Micromax, I am not sure how useful it is for the consumers when BBM for Android is going to be available for free in Google Play.  It will just increase the amount of bloatware on the smartphones for the consumers who don’t want BBM.

BBM for Android and iOS launch expected this week; installation file leaks

BBM For android

The much anticipated cross-platform avatar of BlackBerry Messenger or BBM is soon expected to appear on Android devices and iPhones, with the company hosting events in Malaysia and India on September 18th, where it's expected to offer more details about the service including its launch date.

In the meanwhile, it seemed as if the person behind Samsung Mobile Nigeria's official Twitter account jumped the gun and announced that BBM would debut on Friday, September 20th and confirmed that it would be exclusively available on Samsung devices for three months, in response to a user's tweet.

However, BlackBerry has denied that the service would be exclusive to Samsung customers. The company issued a statement to CrackBerry that quoted Victoria Berry, BBM Communications Director at BlackBerry as saying, "The excitement around the upcoming BBM launch on iPhone and Android devices seems to know no bounds. Although I'm a big fan of this passion, I want to clarify that no one will have an exclusive on offering BBM. We'll be bringing the app to Android and iPhone users across the globe soon."

Earlier, Samsung had announced that the messenger would be available on the company's app storethat comes preloaded on its Galaxy series of Android devices, and on the Google Play Store, across the African continent. Samsung had also agreed to join marketing efforts to showcase BBM for Android to customers and to mobile users across Africa.
